Can I go for a drive on the May Bank Holiday weekend?

    Article

The RAC have predicted a surge of drivers on the road over the May Bank Holiday weekend, with 14.8m trips estimated to take place as people get out to enjoy the sunshine.

The estimated number of trips will surpass our last Easter Bank Holiday weekend by a huge 62%, so it’s important for drivers with planned trips to be aware of traffic, and ensure their cars are in a fit state to travel. To reduce the number of road incidents, the RAC have put together a few tips to ensure drivers are as safe as possible, which you can find here.

The huge number of predicted leisurely day trips comes as no surprise, as government restrictions continue to ease across the UK.

What restrictions are currently in place for leisurely drives?

It’s important, wherever possible, to minimise any non-essential travel in the UK, especially during busy periods such as this Bank Holiday weekend. For those who have planned trips on the road, we’ve included some specifics below on the different restrictions in place when it comes to taking your car out for a leisurely drive.

England: According to a spokesperson for the Department of Transport, “you are able to go for a leisurely drive now the stay-at-home regulations have been lifted”. You can keep up to date with the government guidelines for England here.

Scotland: You can go for a leisurely drive in Scotland, as the restrictions on travel within Scotland were lifted on 26th April. You can check the guidelines in place on the Scottish government website here.

Wales: There are no restrictions in place for leisurely drives around Wales, although the Welsh government are asking people to be mindful of non-essential journeys. You can find information on their full guidelines here.

Northern Ireland: The advice in Northern Ireland is to stay in your local area wherever possible. To see the guidelines in place, click here.

If going out for a drive, remember that you shouldn’t share your car with anybody who is outside your household or bubble. Likewise, it’s important to take a mask with you in case you need to stop off at the shops or in case of a breakdown. Stay safe, and we hope you enjoy your Bank Holiday weekend!
